Comic Book Deacidification Kit
This kit is designed to support the conservation methods outlined in the book “Comic Book Conservation”
by Drs. Shelby Thompson and Paul Kosnik.
For best results, follow the procedures detailed in their publication or refer to our instructional videos on YouTube https://amzn.to/4l7vH7Y
What’s Included:
(1) Food-grade HDPE 1-liter mixing bottle
Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)₂] – 1.8g total
Sufficient to prepare approximately 12 liters of solution
Enough for an estimated 12–24 comic book treatments
(1) 0.15 mL precision measuring spoon
(1) 250 mL tri-pour beaker
Additional calcium hydroxide is available separately.
Preparation Guidelines:
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves.
- Add one level 0.15 mL scoop (approximately 0.34g) of calcium hydroxide to 1 liter of distilled or deionized water.
- Shake thoroughly to mix. Full dissolution may take several hours; allow the solution to sit overnight with occasional agitation if needed.
Technical Notes:
Each 0.15 mL scoop provides approximately 20% of the saturation limit at 20°C (calcium hydroxide solubility: 1.73 g/L).
Mixing instructions are also printed on the bottle label for convenience.
Usage:
Prepared solution is intended for use in the deacidification of comic book covers.
Follow the detailed procedures outlined in the “Comic Book Conservation” for proper application and best results.
